Berghaus was created in 1966, when two keen climbers from the UK, Peter Lockey and Gordon Davison, decided to open a store that sold the sort of outdoor products that met their own exacting needs. Berghaus, in German, loosely means 'mountain hut' and has developed it's range of equipment, from it's mountaineering and climbing routes to a whole range of outdoor gear for a multitude of sports.

In 1980, Chris Bonnington, now inextricably linked with Berghaus, joined the team, helping test Berghaus gear on his expeditions all around the world. Berghaus was also one of Europe's pioneers in the use of breathable fabrics in the use of their clothes, with the use of the now infamous Gore-Tex waterproof breathable fabric.
